Plants have been used as traditional medicine since time immemorial to control bacterial, viral and fungal disease. Because of the growing bacterial resistance against commercial standard and reserve antibiotics, the search for new active substances with antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria is of increasing importance. The present study was focused on the pharmacological screening of Datura metel for its antibacterial and antifungal activity against bacterial and fungal pathogens. Datura metel Linn (Thorn-apple, Devil trumpet, Solanaceae) is a medicinal plant widely used in phytomedicine to cure diseases such as asthma, cough, convulsion and insanity. In the present research work an extensive study on the anti pathogenic effect of crude extract of Datura leaf extract on Enterobacter species was carried out. The anti biotic activity of carbon tetrachloride, benzene and chloroform extract of Datura metel lin leaves was evaluated and confirmed that carbon tetra chloride and benzene extract (1000µg/ml) obtained from the leaves of Datura metel Linn showed excellent activity on comparing with that of standard drug [ciprofloxacin (100µg/ml)].
