The present study was aimed to investigate the antidiabetic activity of methanolic extract of leaf of Bombax ceiba (MEBC) by normal glucose and oral glucose tolerance test (NG-OGTT) and on streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. The effect of MEBC on blood glucose level was studied. In addition, body weight changes, lipid profile and serum biomarkers of liver and kidney function were evaluated in STZ induced diabetic rats. Results revealed that in both studies MEBC shows reduction in glucose levels in normal rats and glucose loaded hyperglycemic rats and in STZ-induced hyperglycemic rats where in the latter rats the elevated serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL,VLDL levels, serum urea and creatinine levels decreased by the treatment with extract with simultaneous increase in serum HDL levels. Hence the results justify that Bombax ceiba possess antidiabetic activity.
